                                                                   Selecting a Freelance Coach

Freelance coaching is an important part of a skater's development. Choosing the right coach can help your skater build skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of the sport.

Why hire a freelance coach?

-Provides 1:1 or small-group instruction in specific skating disciplines (skills, freeskate, dance).

-Helps skaters set and achieve goals

When selecting a freelance coach, families are encouraged to consider several factors, including coaching style, communication, experience, availability, and how well the coach's approach aligns with the skater's goals and personality.

Before making a decision, we recommend:

  • Watching coaches teach during club sessions.
  • Speaking with coaches about your skater's goals and interests.
  • Asking questions about lesson structure, scheduling, and expectations.
  • Considering the coach's experience with your skater's current level and future aspirations.
  • Ensuring the coach's teaching style is a good fit for your skater's learning style.

A successful coach-skater relationship is built on trust, respect, communication, and shared goals. Taking the time to find the right fit can help create a positive and rewarding skating experience.

Families are welcome to contact coaches directly to discuss lesson opportunities. Coaching fees, lesson schedules, and availability are arranged between the family and the coach.

If you need assistance understanding the coaching options available within our club, please contact the Head Coach who would be happy to guide you through the selection process.

All freelance coaches are listed under the COACHES page.

Questions to ask when choosing a freelance coach:

Experience & Fit

Availability & Logistics

Fees & Billing

What disciplines do they coach (e.g., freeskate, dance, skills)?

Do they have experience with the level your skater is currently in or working toward?

What is their coaching philosophy and communication style?

Do they seem like a good personality fit for your skater?

What is their general availability (days and times)?

Are they currently accepting new skaters or is there a waitlist?

Do they travel to competitions or test days? Are there additional travel fees?

Do they have a cancellation policy?

How is billing structured—monthly, per lesson, or by season?

Are lessons paid directly to the coach or through the club?

What are their rates for private, semi-private, or off-ice sessions?

Choosing a freelance coach is a collaborative process that can shape your skater’s journey—on and off the ice. Here are the key steps to help you make an informed decision:

Involve Your Skater

Observe On-Ice Coaching

Your skater’s comfort and connection with the coach is vital. Include them in the decision-making process—they often know who they vibe with.

Watch coaches during sessions to get a feel for their teaching style, energy, and how they interact with skaters. Every coach brings a unique approach—look for someone who matches your skater’s learning style.

Discuss Goals

Confirm Availability

Have an open chat about your skater’s goals—whether it’s testing, competing, or improving skills. Make sure the coach can support that vision

Check that the coach is available on the days and sessions your skater plans to attend. Flexibility and consistency matter when building progress.
